Is traditional direct marketing a thing of the past?
Not really… in fact there is a lot of good in the traditional tools – loyalty programs, data segmentation, email, direct mail (except maybe the concept of mass “targeted” emails that really just annoy the typical consumer). People like to be rewarded for their purchases and they like to be recognized, and it’s necessary to have these in place to stay competitive.
But the consumer is getting inundated with “interruptive marketing” and is becoming less responsive: e-mail open rates and direct mail response rates are at all-time lows. And “me too” loyalty programs are not creating differentiation to the consumer. So depending on traditional direct marketing to develop real, lasting relationships with your customers is risky at best and doesn’t differentiate you from your competition.
At the same time, consumers are more frequently using the Internet as a tool to “be in touch” - find friends, meet new friends, socialize, research products, and stay informed. Consumers want to initiate contact and be engaged. They want relevant content to be available when and where they want it.
